Having begun my 2017 resolutions early, I've been sorting through various past acquisitions. Among these is a group of Nepalese stamps in the designs issued between the 1880s and the end of the First World War. My assumption is that the pelure printings in the scans below are forgeries - not least because genuine copies of stamps such as the tete-beche orange in a block are unlikely to find their way into my collection. Grateful for confirmation of this, and, for my writing-up, any information on when and where the forgeries were produced.

Geoff

GeoffHa - Sorry I cannot help on these at all. All I can say is I fully understand your pain I have a few of these myself (not like your impressive selection though!) - and I simply gave up and just slipped them into my collection with a large questionmark! Hope someone can offer some good advice on these Nepalese 'uglies' / beauties.

Tommtomm:

Fascinating links to illustrations of classic Nepal stamps. I will check my (modest) collection of 19th-century Nepal against these. Thank you!

Thank you, everybody. Will probably await my daughter's return from holiday before venturing a German translation!

These look like some nepal revenue stamps. Go to below site and see if they match.

These are postage stamps, although they had other uses, eg for telegraphs.

Geoff - I just uploaded a mounted collection of Nepal here:
http://www.rfrajola.com/nepal/nepal.htm

I have a full sheet of the forgery of the 1/2 anna vermilion as well as the the genuine half sheet, ex Hellrigl. Your blocks would seem to match the forgery sheet examples. I will email you a scan of the forgery sheet if you contact me by direct email.

PS - The inscription on the margin block of the 4 annas green corresponds only to setting 4 (1886-1890 prints) and the stamp impressions do not match what should be seen for that early print which are clear prints on thick, good quality paper. I would conclude, based only on the scans, that you are looking at a forgery printed on thin paper.
