I would add use distilled water as some city water supplies contain traces of chlorine which may affect the inks used. I faded a handstamp on a cover when using city water, been using distilled water since. If the items are dirty, I use a little ivory bar soap. the 99.99% pure one. I dip a small paint brush into the water, and brush across the bar once or twice and brush onto the submerged item. Every thing looks fresh after the bath and a day or so in the drying book. Which in my case is a pad of water color paper.

Don't throw them into the clothes or dishwasher.
