I believe Ken Lawrence wrote a definitive work.

@jkelley01938: Thanks. However, my search fu must be lacking as all I found on the USSS site was a single research paper (#12) on Liberty Series precancels.

There is a lot of info on USSS' "The Bureau Specialist". For example, Volume XXXIX, #10 (October, 1958) has a one page write-up on the $.25 stamp Paul Revere. You may have to be a member (nominal cost an worth every dime) to view these bulletins.

Also, I believe there is a write-up on every single Liberty Issue stamp.

"The Liberty Series," by Ken Lawrence, et al., is available for sale on the APS website. I think that is the book to get.
