Just bought some stamps that, while they aren't beautiful, they are interesting looking. I was thinking I might display them in a frame somewhere in my house.

I'm sure this is some sort of philatelic no-no on some level. Many years ago I bought the whole sheet of state stamps, framed them and put them on the wall and they are noticeably faded now :(

Sorry if this has been discussed, I did do a search of many combinations of search terms and did not see this question!

I've known one or two people who did that. I would caution against it for the lighting reason that you've already discovered.

I will say that there's nothing wrong with buying a nice common stamp or sheet and displaying it. Once its faded, mail it and buy a replacement for the wall. Seems like a good idea to me -- but I wouldn't put up rare material.

As a collector, I consider that I'm only a conservator for the items I have, during my lifetime. Collectible, rare items will, or should outlive me. I plan to pass what I currently hold on to the next collector/conservator in the same shape that I bought them in.

Geinah, you have a better chance of doing this when you use museum grade glass. Any shop that frames pictures can do this for you when you ask. It will be more expensive, but it is worth it.

no, but a few years ago gave a framed set of the Pioneers of American Industrial Design to my BIL's wife as she was an industrial designer and they fit the theme of their house/lifestyle.

I have cigarette cards framed, postcards framed, all manner of stuff framed, and I'll probably do it with a sheet of French stamps I have. Most stamps are near worthless in money terms - the frame will probably be worth more. Keep away from sunlight though!

Always search from outside of the site, eg, by typing into your address bar, to wit:

display in house site:www.stampcommunity.org

display at home site:www.stampcommunity.org

@stampcrow - wow, that is really impressive! Did you make that?? What a great idea, actually....

@ikeyPikey - sigh. Of course. I did not use the word exhibit, but I did use "display" and "home" so I am not sure why I didn't see that.

As a user of online forums for decades at this point, I understand that it's really annoying to get asked the same question over and over, especially from someone new. However, I also think that "go search for it yourself' somewhat stifles discussion too.

Edit: @ikeypikey thanks for the suggestion of searching outside the site. :)

I'm lucky my wife allows me to "display" my stamps in an album. In the spare bedroom. In the closet. Closet door closed.

UV resistant, widely available and hopefully not too pricey.

I prefer to keep my stamp collection semi-secret. Too many thieves in the world! (My parents' home, in the same city as mine, was burglarized recently.)

UV glass only blocks 90% of the UV rays. I assure you that even if you use UV glass, over time, your stamps will fade.

Some colors will fade more than others. The paper may degrade.

Best to keep rare stamps in binders, to be displayed only when someone is actually viewing them.

So there is no reason to believe the ad from Michaels that the items they sell block 99% of UV?

I do not display at home for obvious reasons. I just don't believe the UV thing. Sounds like a good gimick for the stamp world not letting your stamps fade. If in the open long enough the paper will fade and so will the colors.
Just my opinion.
