Hi folks, I'm new to the group. I inherited my late fathers stamp collection a few years ago. I mainly collect comic books so I've made the decision to move the collection.

I've researched 'Market value' of some of the stamps so I have some understanding of value.

My question to the group is, what are your thoughts on the best way to go about selling a large collection such as this?

I estimate there are between 5 to 10k of U.S. and Foreign stamps (maybe more?) and include what I would consider some high value stamps (unused US Colombian set for example).

The collection is spread out in 7 albums (mounted) and 5 large boxes of loose and packaged stamps (I.e. packaged South Korean stamps from the 50's through 70's as an example).

What are your thoughts on going through an Auction house, vs ebay vs Craigslist etc....

My fear is, I give the collection to an individual for consignment or through an Auction house and I could be the victim of theft. I also understand an Auction house can sometimes yield the best sale results.

I've thought about breaking it up and trying to sell the higher value stamps but I just don't have time.

I've included just a small sampling of some of the stamps from a couple of the albums so you have a better idea of what I'm working with

Thanks for taking the time to look!

One of many discussions on selling. Check out "search" top right of the page located between ebay sales and FAQ.

Hi sneeky, and welcome to the forum. One of the things I always advice in a case like yours is to seek out a stamp club in your area and contact them. They can usually give you the name of a trusted person willing to look at your collection. To find a group in your area please go to http://stamps.org . On their website is a state by state, region by region list of all stamp clubs in the USA

Unless you're an established seller on ebay, I wouldn't try to sell them there yourself, at least not as a single auction. New/low feedback sellers simply don't get many people to see their auctions and you'll probably end up parting with them for far less than they're worth. I have no experience buying or selling through auction houses, so I can't really comment on that option. If you just want to be done with it in one fell swoop, you could also try to find a dealer or two in your area to have a look.

Thanks for the good advice.

The links are very helpful.

I'm going to seek out a local stamp club and go from there.

Thanks,
