Are these a case of faded color or 2 different dates of printing? I used very simple UV light source. Are there different types of UV color for the same stamps? Thanks for any input.

Thanks. Do you know of intentional variations of US? I saw it in German definitive and British queen series as well. |

Galeoptix, what makes you think that is optical brighteners? Rob Roy, what do you mean by "intentional variations"? I have a whole collection of stamps with different amounts of tagging and/or different optical brighteners added. All US too.

Sorry, ment UV, not US. Intentional - I ment to ask if they deliberately formed different UV reaction. |

Rob Roy, This is a hard question to answer. I do remember as a young fellow in the Netherlands we were using a series of stamps with a bust of Queen Juliana on it and at some point the postal officials started to implement automated canceling. They tagged three of the then current stamps. So yes, these were available both tagged and untagged, and it was intentional. The same happened in other countries. Of course, lately we have had a bunch of unintentional tagged and untagged stamps - in that case they are defenetely errors. Hope this answers your question?

The Michel Deutschland-Spezial catalog lists the various tagging varieties for the "Sites" series of definitives (the small ones before the current "Flowers") and they even include a key with illustrations. |

Thanks guys. So the postal utility issued stamps with different UV color, or was it an accident? When I asked "deliberately", I ment if the postal office intended to have white-ish UV glow in year zzzz, and yellowish glow in year cccc? |

The two Austrian definitives 30g & 70g were issued in 1962 and in use for at least a dozen years. Therefore they were reprinted on different paper and colour shades over the years. Here is a section of the Austria Netto Katalog which lists the different papers. The 30g & 70g were printed on Y and W paper Y = white paper, white gum (part light pinkish or bluish) weak/dull to strong/high fluorescence W = white paper, no fluorescence or very weak, dark pinkish fluorescence |

Rob Roy, some of these stamps, especially the definitives were often used for a very long time and as a result sometimes different techniques were used in the manufacture of these stamps. If you recall the Mariazell stamp, it was printed by three different printing methods. The same is often true for the tagging - applications change over time. A special catalog will usually address these differences. See the above post by lithograving

Thank you, it's very educating and horizon widening. Thanks for the translation of the German catalog - google translate wasn't very helpful dealing with German posts lately. As for the Mariazell stamps, did they get different catalog number, given that there's noticable difference, like different writing at the stamp bottom? |

Yes all 3 Mariazell types (engraved, typography & lithography) received their own catalogue number.
There is also a smaller format printed in photogravure. |

Blackish brown to me. It certainly looks like the normal color. Does Scott still say "brown"? |
