Hi!
I picked up some Iraq stamps overprinted "In British Occupation". I believe they are circa 1918 or so, but cannot determine to which country they belong to in my Scotts Internationals........

Is it Iraq, Britain, Mesopotamia, or ???

Thank you!

In the Gibbons Imperial albums, which cover all of the issues between 1840-1936, they're under Iraq. It depends in the focus of your collection. If you're interested in the Empire, you might put them there. Or they could go under Iraq in a Middle East collection.

Mobilman, I just answered another poster on the same question. It all depends on your view and/or collecting interest. I collect Netherlands and Overseas, so the Japanese Occupation of the Dutch East Indies is under the Dutch East Indies in my album. But someone else might stick it under Japan.
I can see if one has a general world collection that it becomes more of a problem!

Scott lists these stamps under the separate country title "Mesopotamia" — which always seemed strange to me.
I would rather regard these as a back-of-the-book section of Iraq material.

"Mesopotamia" is accurate in the sense that Iraq didn't formally exist, but, for practical purposes, the stamps seem to sit better at the start of an Iraq collection. Or, if that were a collecting focus, "The end of the Ottoman Empire". Not in any sense "back of the book", I shouldn't have thought.

Thank you for the responses and info.

Countries that "change names" creates some need for decisions in the world albums, and I may just combine these stamps into the Iraq heading.

Thanks again folks, you are appreciated!!

Big Blue offers 1918-22 Scott N28-N34 "Iraq British Occupation" surcharged stamps of Turkey spaces under "Mesopotamia". They are also listed as under "Mesopotamia" in the Scott catalogue.

As a worldwide collector ,the best way to keep your stamps is the same way your main stamp catalog keeps them . If you use Scott or Michel ,keep your stamps to how the catalog lists them . It will be easier to find in the future ,most collectors follow this rule .
