I''m beginning several collections of non-U.S. stamps using albums without mounts. So I need to buy mounts. I expect to be going through kiloware lots, at least at the outset, so I expect to find many stamps in a fairly short period of time.

How would you buy mounts for the project? Are there certain sizes that predominate, or must I have mounts available in many different sizes? Who are your favorite suppliers of self-adhesive mounts (DAVO is one I found).

Any other advice on buying mounts will be appreciated.

I buy strips, not individual mounts. There are usually several heights at the same price. I buy the highest in a couple of ranges, and cut them down as necessary. You can usually get away with two or three types of strip.

You just have to play around and experiment. Like Geoff, I use strips and have many different widths or heights. After years of experience, I find that there are several that I use the most.

Also, Some people use extra high mounts and cut them in half, making for top mounted mounts. I use black backed Showgards by the way.

The 215 mm (and 240 mm where necessary) strips are your best choice. You can get an idea of what you need by measuring the vertical heights of the stamps you wish to mount. Most perforation gauges have a millimeter scale, and they are small...handy to use.

I buy my scott/prinz mounts from Global Stamps. You cannot beat their prices and service. Also you get free shipping for $25 and over purchase. They have a website. Since I am "old fashioned", I mail them a check for my mounts. I prefer not to use a credit card, whether online or on site.

i used to and will be selling mounts again on ebay. I know not quite the place to advertise by we supply the USPS with their mounts for the yearbook/ACC/panels so I have a large stock of every size. I can either throw them back up on ebay or I can take checks. if you give me the sizes you need. these are all show guard mounts and 60% cheaper. (for me these are left overs and the mounts for full panes, our usually a 1 time size so I have plenty) clear and black.

For US issues Showgard sells a kit that covers older issues - prior to self-adhesive era.

The most popular are 22 (22mm high), 24/25 high, and 41 for singles.

By the way, if you're buying kiloware - i.e, mainly used - there's no need to waste money on mounts - use hinges.

Excellent point, GeoffHa. Using mounts for modern used stamps can be a bit of "overkill". Still, there are are instances where you want to use them. In the case of multiples, using mounts keeps them from getting mangled.

also - I would not use scissors to cut them... they always come out crooked... get a 10 $ plastic paper cutter from Staples.

If you use clear mounts you can get away with stocking fewer sizes. If the mount is a couple mm or so (or more) too large, you don't really notice it with clear mounts like you would with black.
