Photos were taxed 1863-65 and would often appear like your example.
However, if yours is dated 1868, it is an add-on of minimal value for the stamp.
A close-up scan of the stamp is highly desired.

If the photo is of Kit Carson it may also be of interest. I hope better scans are posted by the OP.

Here are new photos of Kit Carson Jr. and the stamp in question. Can someone identify the location of where the stamp was canceled from. Also oldest photo of Kit Carson Jr's Mother Josefa Jaramillo Carson.

If the cancel date is indeed 1868, then the stamp did not originate on that cdv. Someone added it after the fact in an attempt to "improve" the item.

Cdvs were only taxed from August 1, 1864 through July 31, 1866.

Correction noted to my earlier post, yes, 1864-1866.

Upon close examination I believe the two digits at the bottom of the stamp are "65" with the top stroke of the 5 disconnected and curving under the right printed 2. So this would make it in-period.

So John I see what your saying ,1865 cancelled the 5 by bottom right 2 . Too me it looked like an 8 . I'm satisfied with that. So we can say photo's are 1865 concurring with the stamp? In both photos you can see the trim on the baseboard are the same as well. Him leaning on chair and her sitting down as well. Thanks John for your expertise on this subject ,, drifter
