These covers commemorating the centennial of the death of Wild West showman "Buffalo Bill" Cody have an interesting story. I sent four to the Cody, Wyoming post office in advance of the date, and included my email address as usual. On January 10th, I got an email from the Postmaster asking me to call her.
She explained that her clerk had canceled them with the wrong date (January 10, 2016 instead of January 10, 2017). The clerk was very sorry, she said, and the Postmaster had tried to go online to find the envelopes I had used to swap them out for me, but then "saw I had stamped the back."
I explained that the envelopes were my own design. The Postmaster seemed cheered by that.
"Well, if it's possible for you to reproduce them and to buy more stamps," she said, "Please send in new envelopes and the receipt for the stamps, and I will cancel them with the correct date and pay you back."
Yesterday, I got back the four properly-canceled covers, the four mis-canceled covers, and a postal money order for $27.25 (the price I paid for four replacement "Legends of the West" panes).
I think they turned out very nicely, and I am overjoyed by the old-fashioned service I received from this Postmaster.
