I inherited a collection of about 1000 worldwide covers. I should mention that I don't know much about covers. This is the only cover in the collection that had stamps from more than one country on it. Is this particularly unusual or valuable? Any advice on the best way to sell covers? Thanks.

Hi ATC, and welcome to the forum. Is there anything on the reverse side of the cover?

Peter

The Hindenburg's 5th North American Flight departed Frankfurt on 10 July 1936 for Lakehurst, NJ. That matches the dates on the Frankfurt Bahnpostamt cancels. The red confirmation stamp was also used on that flight, and the one shown was only used in Frankfurt.

That doesn't explain the U.S. postage, but it explains the German.

Covers with postage from more than one country are sought-after, but the condition of this cover reduces the value considerably. By applying US airmail postage the sender would guarantee airmail treatment within the US upon its arrival July 13 if it didn't get that automatically, but it overpays quite a lot over the 6 cents per ounce rate. If the sender intended to get special delivery or registered service, it is not marked by the sender or the PO. Since most every zeppelin cover is philatelic, I believe the sender is merely being cute with adding extra stamps for some reason hard to fathom today.

I don't know. What are LZ127 markings? Sorry; I'm new to covers.

The LZ127 was the "Graf Zeppelin". It carried many pieces of mail in it's lifetime.
You might find "LZ127" written on the covers or "Graf Zeppelin" or both.

Your cover is listed in the American Air Mail Catalog as number Z-413. As was mentioned it was flown on the Hindenberg Zeppelin from German to the US on its 5th flight to North America that year.

As for its value I am afraid it is relatively modest. You might be able to get somewhere in the $10 dollar range on a good day on ebay, or a bit less. The cover itself is not rare and on top of that there are some serious issues with it that hold down the value. A couple of months before this was flown, German issued two very attractive engraved stamps with pictures of Zeppelins on them - yours has one of these - the green one - but it does not have its mate - the blue one. Many collectors are fairly picky especially when it comes to relatively common covers so most will want a cover with the pair of Zeppelin stamps. The second problem is that this cover is was back stamped on arrival in Lakehurst, New Jersey. That receiving postmark is considered to be quite important to most collectors as it proves that it was flown on that exact flight. The third issue your cover has is that it is in fairly poor condition with the toning and worn corners. Again, collectors want really nice examples and they are not hard to come by. The fourth issue is that yours has those US stamps on it. They were not at all required and are just a philatelic thing done by the guy who prepared the cover. They detract not only by their presence but also by their condition and the fact that one of them goes off the edge of the cover.

A cover in very clean and crisp condition with both Zeppelin stamps (the blue and the green) and proper backstamp and nicely done from this flight might go for around $20, but this one is not such a cover. My suggestion is to keep this as something to remember the person from whom you inherited these covers as that kind of value is far above what such a cover might bring in a sale.
