Greetings,
I have young eyes but cannot distinguish between wide A and narrow A, and that makes it impossible for me to sort out which overprints these early Selangors are. I believe they are both pale rose and thus 1883-1885. SG does not mention the S with a tail, and I am flummoxed.
I would be most grateful for advice.

Lovely stamps, Michael.
lovely condition, these often suffer "tropical toning"

The "S with a tail" as you refer to it, is just an ink smudge.
"PAID" may suggest a fiscal cancellation.

I'll update shortly with my opinion.

If it was mine, I'd prefer to imagine it was a security device until proven otherwise.

Interesting observation, and quite valid, I should think.

Can't answer more right now, we have impending floods here at the moment,
water level is up to my back step, I have sewerage spewing from my kitchen
drain grate.
Have to get working on my Ark.....

Gosh, thank you and thank you for suggesting security I had not even heard of security devices other than company names. You are right. http://michelhoude.com has a wonderful website with descriptions of such devices, including this. So what is the significance of the device? Does it cancel the stamp? How do I describe the stamp when I list it for sale?

Opinion:
Something like..
Malay States Selangor SG xxxxx
"PA" part strike (possibly theft prevention or PAID fiscal strike)
Used no thins etc etc.

I'd suggest a lot of the collectors who see these on ebay, will be dedicated Selangor
enthusiasts, and will probably be aware of the stamps, esp the ones collecting
special overprints, you may get good response.

Theft prevention:
Stamps were adhered to the cover, then marked so as to prevent the postal staff
removing the stamps for re-use.

Very prevalent in early India.

The commonest "theft prevention" marking is "stamped" written in hand script across the stamp/s.

The Bold "X" theft prevention, lies on one of the rarest Indian Stamps in the catalogue.

Examples

Thank you so much for the ID and enlightening me on the SECURITY concept. It was entirely new to me. I checked on the NET and sure enough it is a British Malaya security stamp. But what does that mean? When I list it, do I describe it as postally used? Otherwise it looks like a revenue, which I thought it was.

Just list to the best of your ability, be honest,
and show scans of the backs of the stamps.
You will need to disclose gum / no gum etc.
Don't call them fiscal or otherwise, the collectors will know.

I'd suggest these will sell very easily, these overprints would be sought after,
in my opinion.
