Hi; Here is a little goody concerning your cover.Mr Wolff is an attorney or Solicitor's office for those of you in GB.We know that because it's addressed: Monseiur Wolff avocat avoué.Found something in
the archives about the fact that he was dispensed from a stage concerning his appointments in the court...He must of been well known.
S0 it's not just some anonymous cover...nowIt's in german & french

@perf12 - wow, it seems you are able to find info about everything! Thank you Honestly, it didn't even occur to me to check up the name. Once it is done, I am getting curious - however neither gothic German or French are on my CV.... do you mind to translate the highlights?

Well I do this often when I have certain covers. If the countries concerned are not to complicated in terms of googling through different data sources.Generaly speaking most of the covers existant today were preserved over years and years, and they could be known people or companies that to this day ;for some; continue in one form or another.Plus there is some history behind every letter:small, but interesting enough to dig into. It's like being a detective of sorts!
The real challenge is deciphering a cover in every angle of light as you do also.
((The text essentially says it is accorded to Mr.Henri wolff attorney in
Diekirch is dispensed from the training course(something of that nature;law terms) required in the exercise of his official status as attorney)) the official decrees and the obtention of his new status..
In fact there is still the family Wolff in luxembourg.
Another thing ;if you can find covers with the same name often, that means it was someone very active in the society.Company directors,Merchants,Traders import export and the like and they can span 5-20 years of mail reception to their same addresse... I'm talking about the 1845-1890 time zone in general.

perf12 - thanks a lot for your reply. I am impressed with the level of detail you put into studies! I absolutely agree it is fascinating to check up the names on the letters as well! On the other hand - at some point I have to try to set a line for what I can allow myself to spend time on... First of all I am a general WW collector of stamps - so I am afraid deep forensic study of classic covers will steal a big chunk of available time if I should choose to go into names, families etc. But - you have sparked an interest - guess I could do a quick google search when and if the names are readable at all.
