I have this card from 1913 with what I call old German written on the back. I see it often on cards up untill the Second WW. In this case I can read all of it with the exception of 1 word. The first word on the second line. I personally think it is entsetzlich(terribly) but I am not sure. It can change the whole meaning of the card.

I can read:

Shanghai 8.1.13

China is contrary to Japan ????? Dirty.

Can anybody help me with this word. Thank you for your effort. Johan.

I think the writer was a bit sloppy in grammar or perhaps this was slang no longer in use.

The gist of this is "China is the opposite of Japan; terrifyingly dirty.

The missing word I believe is entsetzlich which they wrote as entsetzlig which has many meaning. ANother translation could be appaulingly dirty.

There is nothing wrong with the grammar and spelling of the message, which is in perfect German and reads:

China ist im Gegensatz zu Japan
In contrast to Japan, China is
entsetzlich schmutzig.
appallingly dirty.
