I have been semi-interested in the Straits Settlements, Malaya, and Singapore and finally started mounting these on Steiner pages. I am now working on my inventory file and started with data I extracted (copy/paste) from stampworld.com.

So far, I find stampworld's and SG's (very close in approach to organize) more logical than Scott. Scott still tends to try to group stamps over a long period into one group rather than a more chronological approach with varieties often production aspects (new color, paper, watermark) in separate (subsequent) groups. I am no expert so very time consuming to match SW/SG/Scott and my other authoritative source. I suspect the Scott Classic has more details that the standard catalog. The other challenge is I will stop for a while to work on other areas and forget some of the detail nuances (watermarks, die I vs die II), etc.

If anything, it does force you to learn more.

My question is there any other websites or publications that can help with visual identification of Straits and Malaya/Malaysia? SG goes into a lot of detail but buried in footnotes all over the place and with the all those Malaya states it is confusing. I would need to look at the Scott classic to see if they provide info. The details in the standard catalog are not very good.

Also, kudos to SG for their regional catalog printed on non-glossy paper -- unlike Scott. Scott needs to abandon their annual current everything philosophy and focus on regional books. They can do the annual thing is every few years.

Not used it, and I don't think it covers all of the Malay states, but this is a local Singapore catalogue. Others may be able to assess its merits!

Rod222, who publishes that catalogue?

I have the SG "Brunei, Malaysia, and Singapore" (2004 edition) and the "Standard Stamp Collecting Catalogue of Malaysia, Singapore & Brunei" published by International Stamp and Coin in Malaysia in 2004 as well. This in addition to Scott (not classic).

I also re-found my Scott/SG cross reference from http://stamps-auctions.com/lists/strats-a.html.

I will think about whether I want to remote in SC order.

I employ Scott in all my pages and database, (for me) it is the international language when buying selling, querying, digress at your peril.

When flyspecking / varieties depending on location, then I consult the required specialty catalogues .

Rod

Fear of going back down the evolutionary scale, potentially leading to the growing of a tail and walking on all fours, means I feel compelled to continue to digress. No peril has yet materialised. May I relax now, or should I remain vigilant?

Rod, I have the 2004 version of the catalogue you mentioned if that is the catalogue you used for the screen shots. The 2004 format is different and there is a notice that it would be split in the next year (2005).

Right. Cheers.
I use mine for varieties ID, then afford my own "Scott" number variation
on my personal Steiner pages.

They are nice, easy to follow catalogues.

Esp good for the later "insect" series where the printing had many varieties.
