I have switched completely to mounts. Yes, it seems rather expensive when you're mounting cheap stamps, but makes sense to me when the stamp isn't so cheap. I really don't get using mounts for mint stamps and hinges for used. Why? The cost of the stamp? But I have a few used stamps that cost more than a couple of pages of mint stamps.

Also modern stamp mounts don't allow flipping stamps up. So if the "hinging" benefit of hinges is not used much, do stamps need hinging? Could they be glued to the album page instead?

Some collectors use Hawid-style (drop-in)mounts because the stamp is easy to repeatedly remove and insert. With this type of mount, it's easy to remove the stamp and examine the back, for example. If you collect classic MNH, you should probably use this type of mount, anyway, as they're less likely to affect the gum than the split-back type.

Using glue to adhere the stamp directly to the album page only makes sense if you don't care about the stamp's future. Any storage/display method should make it easy for a stamp to be removed and/or replaced.

A hinged, used stamp can always be soaked to remove the hinge if desired.

Sometimes it's necessary to soak a hinge off a mint stamp, if the hinge remnant is slowly bending or damaging the stamp, and can't otherwise be removed. I have a high value mint Macau Ceres stamp that I would rather have as a no-gum, unused, stamp than have to buy another copy. Moral of the story is; as others have said on different threads; use minimal moisture when attaching a hinge to a stamp.

Even though they are called super safe stamp hinges, are they both super and safe?
