Providence Rhode Island 5 Cent Stamp With Red Strands. Authentic?

Hello. Is this Providence RI stamp authentic? You can clearly see red strands in paper. Are those silk strands? Thank you for your time in advance!

The Rhode Island Philatelic Society celebrates
the centennial of the issue of the Providence
postmaster's provisional stamps in November,
with an appropriate program including a
philatelic exhibition, a dinner, special
postmarking cachets, and other features.

The committee in charge of the ceremonies has
prepared two attractive miniature sheets
bearing fine reproductions of the old
Providence 5¢ and 10¢ of 1846, which are
available at 25¢ a set from Myron W. Finch,
Box 66, East Side Sta., Providence.

Providence is the repository of an almost
complete specialized collection of any one
of the various postmasters' provisional stamps
of the early 1840s.

It was assembled over many years by the late
Alpheus B. Slater and conveyed under a trust
agreement to the Rhode Island Historical Society.
This collection of the Providence stamps not
only included the stamps, covers, and other
valuable associated material, but the original
printing plate as well.

Appears to be a George Hussey forgery. This forgery is not without value, but of course not as valuable as an original.

So they printend silk threads in reproductions?

Don't know about the silk threads. A large quantity was produced for George Hussey. I wouldn't be surprised if part of the print run was on whatever paper was available for the forger. Either way, it's definitely the wrong paper for an original.

I posted "appears to be a George Hussey forgery" because I wasn't sure about the paper. It certainly has the design elements of a George Hussey forgery, and the flaw in the "O" would help to plate the position. But I agree that the paper in your stamp has a lot of noticeable colored threads and appears to be very thin, both characteristics that I have not noticed before in pics of George Hussey forgeries. But then again, it could be a reproduction/forgery of a George Hussey forgery -- stranger things have happened...

This is an original reprint from The Rhode Island Philatelic Society from 1946. When reading the backside of this item, it speaks of being printed on thicker and laid paper. There were 1000 printed. This is #338.

It was in one of my Dads books. My father and grandfather were both members of R.I. Philatelic Society. My grandfather started working for the Providence R.I.Post Office in 1914. He became superintendent in the twenties and retired in 1952.

Any thoughts on whether this block of 12 that is being offered by William Langs on ebay for $7500 is genuine. I have read some of his ebay history here on SCF and stampsmarter. Siegel has never offered a block of 12. They offered 2 blocks of 9, and that may have been the same block.

They were reprinted in 1898.
