I was going to look at some top loading mounts but it seems Hawid is much more expensive than Prinz/Scott. Davo are even more expensive.

Subway pricing
Hawid -27mm x 215mm 25 strips clear $9.20. 36 cents per strip
Scott 27mm x 215mm 22 strips $5.19. 23 cents per strip

I would have thought Hawid would have the technical cost advantage but guess Hawid just wants more.

Other options?

I have never used Scott, but I am pleased with Hawid. Price differential is pretty big, tho, isn't it?

You may wish to try
Measure your desired top loading size.
Double that
Check with a Scott equivalent, perhaps a tad more,

Then cut the Scott in half lengthways, (with a trimmer $14 upwards) thereby getting 2 strips.

Works for me, using sheet protectors.
-----------

I bought my initial Hawid from the German factory -42% discount
By the time I paid currency exchange and freight,
they ended up just circa 2c cheaper per strip.

Now that is an interesting idea. I do have a mount trimmer. I will experiment this weekend. I have been a black background fan but the black mounts block Steiner page stamp frames.

Thanks!

The only caveat Angore, split Scott mounts may not grip your stamps as you wish. You shall need to trial and error.
I find them OK, but I use sheet protectors.

If you do not, you may find the stamps skewing in the mount as you page turn.

Hmmmm... I use split back mounts, some Scotts, but mostly Showgard. I don't have problems with stamps skewing in the mounts unless the mounts are too large and the stamp is inserted in the top of the mount allowing it to slip down in the mount.

The problem I have had with top mounts (open on 3 sides) is the stamps tend to work free and fall out loose on the page.

But not to judge. Each to their own. That's the great thing about stamp collection... very few absolute right or wrongs.

My goal was to find a less expensive method to mount stamps without using hinges. If I can find something 50% of a standard mount I am interested. To reword another saying: Stamp Collecting is journey not a destination. (If you know the original statement, +1 on you).

I use Showgard, myself. Forget Hawid unless you like wasting your money.

Angore,

I bought Hawid mounts from http://greendragonstuff.com after a lot of research on price. Current price listed for 25 clear 27mm x 210 mm strips is $6.95. Shipping on 3 packs was $7.95.

Check Matilda's Stamp & Coin Supplies.

I've been buying Showgard blackmounts there for years, their prices are a bit better than in most other places. I also buy double-size mounts and divide them into 2 strips each.

Hi

As told to me: The top clear layer of a Hawid open top mount has a slight "curl" near the top, thus keeping the stamp in.

In my opinion, cutting a Showgard, Scott or Prinz mount in half does not have the "curl" and stamps may fall out, especially the larger ones.

Personally, I prefer Showgard mounts rather than Scott and Prinz. The latter feel very thin whereas the Showgard has some "body" to it. However, for very small stamps Hawid mounts are fine. I use them for mounting stamps under 20mm high.

As a note. I had a friend who bought Showgard seconds. A few in the package were not useful but the remainder were just fine. Look into that. It does save money. I believe Showgard, as well as some pther dealers in supplies, sells "seconds".

I have been using Showgard seconds for some time and like them a lot. My last two Showgard 'seconds' purchases where done through ebay seller 'stampgolfer' and I have been pleased.

I would note that a few of the strips have what I would call 1/4 - 1/2 inch 'scruffs' on the surface but I found them easy to work around.

I am currently awaiting a couple of Kilograms of Hawid /showguard seconds from Canada.
The last shipment lasted me over 2 years.

Hope we get some green planet "recycling" brownie points.....
