Spink-Maury has it as a #14, 20 c. blue, type CERES, 1854, with descriptions of Type I and II very different from Scott (?) |

Agreed this is Scott 15/Maury 14. In terms of catalog value, the Type II is worth about three times as much as the Type I. However, in my opinion, based on the description in Maury, I believe your stamp is a Type I. This leaves the question of color. My 2009 edition of the Maury catalog distinguishes fourteen color variations for the Type I, of which "bleu foncé" (dark blue) and perhaps "bleu très foncé" (very dark blue) - both of which were issued in 1856 - may apply here. (Note the difference in color in the image below.) I believe the stamp on the left is blue. The stamp on the right is, in my opinion, at least dark blue, as is (I think) yours. |

Based on the reference "Le grand nuancier des timbres classiques de France Cérès et Napoléon" -by Bernard Binette, the darker blue would be named "bleu foncé" - very difficult to translate so dark blue might do it. In fact this precious reference shows 12 different kinds for the Napoleon 1854 20c type 1 blue #14 Maury. Impossible to scan- with allotted 100K -you have to have the reference, which I bought a few week back. This page scan gives you an idea-Rene |

#98 is the number of the color for Maury #14 20 c. blue Type I (in your case colour shade 98 and not cat #) Cheers- Rene |

Would I be able to get a positive ID for this stamp please? I have it as Sc#35 1863 40c orange on yellowish. but just a guess. Would like it to be accurate, for my Turkey Album Page. Thank you. |

Nice Snypme cancel, Rod! Love the name, as it reminds me of online auction bidding ("snipe me").
The stamp, however, is NOT France #35 in the Scott catalog; #35 is the "EMPIRE FRANCAIS" issue. Your stamp is "EMPIRE FRANC", which would make it France #27. The Scott Classic lists 4 different color varieties: orange(27), pale orange(27a), yellow orange(27b), and bright orange(27c). I don't have access to my France albums right now, so I can't upload a comparison for you. Hard to say from a single scan on my uncalibrated monitor, but I'm leaning toward yellow orange. |

Smyrna postmark Fabulous khj! Thank you, I'd have it as yellow orange, or perhaps pale orange ('cause it's on "yellowish") Again, thanks for your time. I think I have Mauray, I'll have a dekko in their catalogue. |

It's more fun when you leave the name in French instead of using the English Smyrna.
I just viewed your stamp again using my laptop monitor instead of an external monitor -- and now it looks more like pale orange or orange! Just goes to show how judging color using uncalibrated monitors or having no simultaneous color reference scan is not very reliable!
I didn't check my Y&T for their color listings, since you had initially referenced Scott. |

Cheers I did check Yvert et Tellier, They only list 3 Orange, Pale orange, and Bright Orange. So, I guess we go Pale Orange. Salutations. |
