I posted this image of the first Faroe Island provisional 2öre on 5öre surcharge yesterday in another thread under Modern Stamps, and it was pointed out that there is an inverted '3' in the date slug. Does anyone have the knowledge to tell us why this is, and what does it mean? Is it a time code (i.e., morning and afternoon)?

It probably means that it was the morning after and the personn changing the slugs on the canceller was not paying attention. Nice, but nothing unusual,

Peter

Both the "F" and the upside-down "3" codes were used in Thorshavn from 1917 to 1930. The inverted "3" was not a one-off usage.

I expect they are for the Danish for morning and afternoon, Formiddag and Eftermiddag.

the inverted 3 is as Nigel mentioned, eftermiddag, meaning afternoon.... 4pm to 9pm is the timeframe it was handled.

there's alot of forgeries on this stamp.. this does however look like the cancel is ontop of the provisional stamp... however forgeries involving a printer are not uncommon, you'd need to contact someone certified in these stamps if you feel it's worth it.

you can get covers for around 900-1000 DKR instead of just a cut off.. and certificate would cost at least 150DKR + shipping (typically 2* registered shipping, and that's expensive in denmark. total could end up over 250DKR)

Sorsh, thanks for your comment as well. I may get someone to look at it one of these days, but it "looks" genuine enough. At least the postmark has been applied over the surcharge, and the two are of a subtly different shade of black, which is a good start!
