Hi guys...It is hard enough identifying stamps with catalogues, it is even harder when 2 different catalogues contradict each other....Here is a good example below.

Here is the Newfoundland stamp for an example...
Scott 211iii (Unitrade) - AM10 (N.S.S.C. Newfoundland Specialized Stamp Catalogue )

Here is the Unitrade version of the stamp...Notice the standard perf is 13.8x13.8 and the variety is indicated as perf 14.1x14.1 as shown below....

Now the N.S.S.C.catalogue shows the standard perf is 14.1x14.1 and the variety is shown as perf 13.8x13.8 as shown below...

And one catalogue identify s issue date as 1931 and the other as 1933..Makes it hard to collect stamps, dont you think..???

Robert

I see date inconsistencies in different catalog in addition to other details especially on issues without an official first date. Some may be typographical and other. It can be confusing determining which source is correct.

Robert:

This stamp was originally issued without the overprint in 1931 and is C9 in Unitrade. I suspect that is what NSSC is pointing to as I don't see any reference to the overprint.

itma..In Unitrade page 696 (2017 catalogue) scott number 182 shows stamp with NO overprint...Page 699 (2017 catalogue) shows scott 211 as over print..Also N.S.S.C. shows #182...AM7 and AM10 as the stamp.

Jarnick ((Boggs' gives the date of issue as February 9, 1933.))...Who are we suppose to believe..???

N.S.S.C. gives March 13th..

Robert

Hi, Scott lists this stamp as no.211 1933 with overprint.
no. C9 wmk 1931 no overprint.
It's frequent that different catalogs list the stamps in different ways.I'ts not a problem I find.

perf12..true
My concern is the difference with catalogues that identify which perf is standard and which is the variety...And of course issue dates.

Robert - Does the NSSC catalog have a separate catalog entry for the stamp as overprinted just as the Unitrade catalog does? The one that is showing in your image does not mention an overprint.

I am essentially rewording what itma said in a slightly different way in the hope that it helps.

Robert:

Sorry, I'm not following you. My Unitrade is 2012. In it, 182 is a different stamp - 30c olive-brown Grand Falls. The design of the stamp that was subsequently overprinted started our as C6 (issued 2 Jan 1931 on unwatermarked paper) and reissued C9 (issued in 1931 - mm/dd not specifies but presumably the NSSC date is accurate - on watermarked paper).

Also, as well as having the same year of issue, the varieties in NCCS seem to match those of C9 far better than 211.

So I go back to my contention that NCCS AM10 and Scott C9 are the same stamp.

Frank.

wert: What is the date of the version of the N.S.S.C. catalogue that you are using? Sometimes having the most updated version can help because new changes are made over time.

It is entirely up to the editor of each catalog to determine which variety is "standard" and which is the "non-standard" variety. Generally the editor will chose the least expensive as the standard variety. In this case, for the original 1931 issue, the perf 14.1 is less expensive and is so given the honor of being assigned the main catalog number. For the overprinted stamp, the perf 13.8 is less expensive and so gets that honor. It is all really just arbitrary which is which.

If one is using a 2017 Unitrade Canada stamp catalogue then one should also be using a 2017 Newfoundland Specialized Stamp Catalogue too in order to make the most correct and up to date comparisons.

Hey Wert, the dates make sense, the Airmail stamp c9 was printed in 1931, then there must have been a shortage of 15 cent normal postal rate, so they overprinted the stamp in 1933 with L & S Post (Land and Sea) to accommodate the shortage.

see http://www.redislandnf.com/redixstam00g30.html

and BNA Topics 1953 Volume 10 No1 and No3 have some info also

As for the listings in the catalog, I guess it would be the first stamp that was reported to be listed first.

Whats also weird is I thinks there might be more perf varieties on this issue.

like 13.8x14.1 and 14.1x13.8, 14.1x14.1 and 14.3x14.3

NSSC also lists another perf variety 14.3x14.1

I guess the other question to ask, is how many printings of this stamp was done, is it same to assume, that each perf variety is from a separate printing, or did the printers have multiple perforators?

Any comments?
Trodent
