Altona was in the Duchy of Holstein, whose duke happened also to be King of Denmark.

The stamp has been placed on the card sideways and is not tied to the card by a cancel. Ignoring the pen/initial marks, there is clearly another partial cancel going down the bottom edge of the stamp that does not continue onto the card. That suggests that a used stamp was cut in half and then put onto the card.

My thoughts. First I think KHJ is wright. a stamp cut in half and put on the card(to make it look better). Second: What is the name of the town on the bottom, Sondern? that is a little place in Germany, so no Danish stamp needed. Third: from 1864 Altona(Hamburg) was no longer Danish but German. so no need for a Danish stamp(taking into account that the card went to Sondern germany). Four: What does the pencil remark above the stamp say? Sorry same at this moment I do not think it is right. I hope for you that I am proven wrong. Kind regards, johan.

Johan is correct about the dates. but not the town

the small town of Sondern is quite far down in Germany, and from Altona (even under danish rule) 2skilling (4skilling cut in half(which was in no time in history allowed nor needed since there was a 2skilling)) wouldn't have been the correct rate on a letter going this far. 2skilling was local, foot post rate.

however the town is, I think, Tondern (tønder)

Khj is also right, there is a cancel on the stamp that should have been on the postcard as well.

it's a funny forgery, that would look really good in my forgery collection.. so if you're willing to part with it, i'll buy it from you.

It may be possible that someone took a Used stamp, cut it in half and used it on the postcard as postage. I say this because there is no other sign of postage paid on the card yet it seems it did go thru the mails.

Th postage rate must be 2 skilling as this is written on the stamp: "2 S" as well as in blue crayon in the center of the card.

Is it possible that a.4 sk stamp was postmarked, bisected and used as a postage due stamp?

Looks like a forgery to me. Card was sent from Altona, Germany to Tondern (northern Schleswig, Germany...at that time).

A damaged, too-old Danish stamp has been "bisected" and glued to a stampless card from 1872-5.

I'm a bit of a cynic. It could simply be that someone had a damaged Danish stamp, an unstamped card, and decided to get "creative" by cutting the damaged part of the stamp off and creating a fantasy piece for the purpose of letting people wonder about it.
