I will be the first to admit that I have a quirky sense of humor. Which is probably why I enjoy collecting New Years postcards from Latvia. I bid on this one on ebay last week and it just arrived this morning. Sent registered mail and of course just left in my mail box as usual. But it arrived safely with 2 other postcards which is the important part. The postcard was mailed from Riga 29.XII.34.

The next 3 postcards are earlier additions to the collection. This first one has the stamp removed but was mailed in Riga I'm guessing in the 1930's.

This next one has a Riga Machine Cancel 31 Dec 1939 with a map and 'Apcelo Dzimto Zemi' which was part of the tourism campaign of the 1930's urging people to see their country. I love the gentleman contemplating accepting a glass of champagne from the elf. Judging by his attire, he may have already had a few too many .

This last postcard was never mailed but has a message dated 1952 on the reverse. But I think the postcard dates back quite a ways before that.

Well, actually, I find them rather charming.
