Hello all! Please help! I keep seeing Penny Reds listed as C8, C10 or other C numbers. What on earth does this mean? Completely confused...

Skyboss, people on ebay sometimes use all sorts of identifications so they can find the stamp in their stockbooks. The above may or may not be examples of this sort of thing. I would suggest that you purchase an older Stanley Gibbons and try to determine for yourself what stamp it is.

The A, C or B etc numbers refer to the stanley Gibbons Specialised Catalogue identification.
For example...an S.G.7 stamp is a red-brown stamp that was printed from the original plates used to print the Penny Black and has a basic A2 number in the Specialised catalogue. Further specialised identification is indicated by any other number/s such as the AS6 within the basic A2 grouping.
