Hello all,

We have received a query which we are unable to answer, despite browsing through all our Postal History catalogues/resources.
Perhaps someone can help out with the answer.

This the query.

Quote

I'm doing some research on period of usage of below "LONDON PAID ", like the one on the enclosed cover to Canada
I'm not really able to find any information here, nor online, nor catalogue for this cancel.
I'm sure there is anyhow a publication with first known dates of usage (here you may be able to kindly help me).
Seems to me however, having found many internet images, that it seems there has been a cut off time between the two cancel types below, somewhere around mid-1865. <<< July / Aug 1865 >>
Or said otherwise, it doesn't seem to me to have seen (yet) the "LONDON / PAID" cancel used after 1865, and no "LONDON PAID " before August 1865
I therefore hope you can help me on some references for this cancellations period of usage.

Sorry about the small images but this is how they were received.
Regards
Ron and Eunice.

I'm afraid I'm not going to be much help here. This is the only example I have, and it's also 1865.

Here is 3 examples of the red London PAID mark often described as a transit mark that seems to be used commonly on mail going abroad in 1860 /70s. Note different letter codes used b c m etc, The 2nd example is 1867 to Amsterdam. The 3rd example is one from 1873 from America. So its not used for local mail its used for foreign mail either to or from London. Hope that helps.

Hello all,
Many thanks for the responses which have been passed on.
This is one of those 'ripple effect' queries. Originally from Switzerland to the U.K. and from there to us in Australia and on to you all.
Great stuff and how good is this forum. So good that so many collectors are willing to share their information.
Regards.
Ron.

Welcome, also I could not find any of that Paid before 1865 so I think it was in use from 1865 till at least 1900 on foreign mail.
