It's a censor stamp from during WWI. This is the third of three "G.P.C. Saarbrücken 3" designs, and it was used from late 1914 until early 1915.

Now that we are in the middle of the anniversary of the Great War or the 1914-1918 War (no one knew there would be a second world war at the time so they did not call it World War I) collecting cards and covers from that time is a fun hobby. Most are censored and there is a very large range of markings that can be collected. For the most part they are not especially rare since there was so much mail that was censored so most of these do not cost much. Also, specializing in one area of collecting is a good idea since it would be easy to be overwhelmed by all of the different countries and military units and so on.

I assume there are postmark catalogs of German overprints (as well as other countries doing the same). I see a lot of postmarks, but don't really know what they are except for the few (Bahnhofs, one of my subcollections). Italy is another country that has a ton of war related postmarks. Ah well, I may not know what they are, but it is fun collecting them.

The area of censored mail is very large and as such there are many reference books and catalogs. Most are sorted by things such as which war, which country, navy vs. land, civilian vs. military censors, prisoner of war, etc. etc. etc. Here is a ling to a page from a seller of catalogs with which I have no relationship of any kind, but rather will give you a sense of just how many catalogs and reference books there are. I assume this seller is only listing what he currently has and this is not a comprehensive list of all such catalogs and reference books. http://pbbooks.com/war.htm

PoStat4evR,

Feel free to post any German ones you have and I'll see if I can ID them. I have a pretty solid reference library.

Kimo: Thanks for the reference. Went over and looked. Far to many books to invest in at this time of life.
PostmasterGS: Thanks for the offer, may take you up on it.

Both: I pick up postal stationery items (mostly) and find myself purchasing them due to unusual postmarks associated thereupon. A few I figure out eventually, and a few it is just a matter of being able to read them to research them online or in book I do have. That is just one of the things that make it enjoyable. Just sayin'

I cannot imagine anyone having all of those reference books. My point in providing that link to that philatelic book seller guy's stock on hand was to show that the field of collecting censorship markings is enormous and if one wishes to collect this fascinating field of postal history one really should narrow down one's area to something manageable and buy the one or two or three catalogs/reference books that cover that particular small piece of the whole spectrum of these kinds of covers and cards. For example, I collect aviation unit censored cards and covers from WW 1. And even this is a very large area with almost countless different possibilities of markings. I used to collect censored mail from WW 1 that was sent by nurses and doctors and even that very narrow area was almost too large. If you would like to narrow down, perhaps you might start with the card you showed and focus on civilian censorship of WW 1 from Germany, or something like that.

Kimo: Thanks for the info. I mainly collect postal stationery, but when I find something of interest outside of that area I usually pick it up for the old collection. Case in point: Here is a Egypt censor marking
