Hello,

I found these three covers in our family album. Could you help me from which time they are and perhaps which catalogue no.? Especially about the Japanese one I don't know anything, as there is not even a year that I can read.

hi;The Japanese postal stationery has a Tokyo cancel.Check out this link;
http://www.sanrizuka.com/koban/lbA1-6.htm
The sudan stamps are Scott 11 ,3 Mills 1898
Scott 10 ,2 Mills 1898
or Scott 19, 3 Mills 1903-21
Scott 18, 2 Mills 1902-21
The two types depend on the Watermark..
Maybe someone can read the arab cancel to know exactly.
Are these entire covers? It would be nice to see the full cover. The destination can play an important part in the evaluation!
The China cover is either Scott 211 or 230 depending on the printing.I can't make out the details in this pic.

merci, perf12.

yes, they are complete covers. my mother-in-law doesn't want me to show the complete address :), but it's in Germany.

Sudan: the watermark of the Sudan stamps will be difficult to see on cover, is there a big difference in value? The cancel says probably 1912, I think.
China: also here the question if it is important concerning value if it's 211 or 230?
Japan: I like this stationery and the Tokyo cancel, thanks for the link. Are there any catalogues (numbers) for these stationeries?

hi; If you look into E bay.com under ''China junk'' there is a cover on aution right now.The stamp alone has minimal value 1 or 2 dollars as well as the Sudanese stamps but the destination matters a lot.

Are there some rules of thumb for the destination? (like: there's more valu if the destination is in another country or another continent)

I guess there won't be a catalogue featuring these fine differences?

Well; I would say the more exotic the destinations are rarer thus more sought after ;and more expensive.Multiple frankings on the cover always fetch more. For Instance the Soudan cover if it was posted too Egypt or london would not be as rare as sent too Russia or Brazil! That's for sure.Even some common stamps on cover too these off beat places change the price. There are cancels that are rare ;and a lot of stuff that can add too the value. It all depends on the country and the world wide out-put of sent out mail.We could write about this for hours..

stamperix - it's common practice to put a post-it-note over addresses when you don't want addresses and names shown. Also - people like to see the backs of covers as well.

hi, ok I will try. Problem: two of the three covers contain only Arabian oder Japanese writing all over - I don't know which is the address. Ok you might say, then it was not sent to Germany :). That's probably right indeed, I think I had a thinking error - or is it possible that a letter from Japan gets to a German address only with Japanese writing?

stamperix - a very good question. My sense is that people address letters in their own language and the addresses are figured out at the receiving end. Just for example - letters sent to Switzerland (Helvita) / Hungary (Magyr) etc etc rarely use the country's name but the name as it appears in the sender's language and culture.
