I can't find any information for revenues on laid paper, or, I am looking in the wrong place. I have this stamp that just came in the mail today. It is in my opinion absolutely on laid paper. Common? Rare? Does not exist supposedly?

Much more likely that what you see as laid lines are just leftover markings from whatever document the stamp was on. |

Nope. The laid lines show in fluid and really show as the stamp dries. Another interesting observation is the stamp dried about twice as fast as another R39c from the same batch and cancelled 11 days later with the same handstamp cancel. |

I have examples similar to this in appearance. I've never seen the existence of 1st issue revenues on laid paper corroborated by any expert or expertizing authority. |

Thanks. Maybe you can post them? The $64,000 question is do you believe they are true laid paper? It seems unlikely to me that nobody would care if an example were to be certified. |

Elliot Perry writing as Christopher West in his volume "The Revenue stamps of the United States " Castenholtz and Sons on page 5 give a short treatise on laid paper both horizontal and vertical. He touches on transfer from documents and does not accept it. |

Do you mean that he does not accept that that the texture is transferred or that they are laid paper? (sorry, my copy of the book isn't handy at the moment).
At $27 per stamp minimum plus 2-way shipping costs, it's a rather expensive proposition to determine whether stamps of otherwise nominal value are laid paper, given that I don't know that there is any demand. I've never heard a 1st issue collector seeking laid paper examples. It's sort of like stitch watermarks. They may be legit varieties, but the market treats them as curiosities at best.
I suppose that in the long term, if examples were expertized and they were added to Scott, that could create demand, but I wouldn't bet on it. |

This is the only revenue stamp in the Philatelic Foundation's online database with supposed laid paper. Looks like it wasn't laid though. Jim |
