The examples shown with one cent values are another scheme that the companies used to try to defeat the counterfeiters of their products. The rationale being that it would be easier to prosecute if the nefarious ones trading on their name were counterfeiting the equivalent of "currency." As I have mentioned elsewhere, today's prosecutions rely upon counterfeiting trademarks.

While we often refer to these as facsimiles (because of their functional similarity), they often do not resemble closely an issued private die proprietary stamp. Duffy's, for example, did not have a private die proprietary stamp. Yet, indeed they used a similar defense as those who did have a private die stamp.
