I only have a 2009 Scott for the 1937- issues, but I am finding many stamps perforated 14 1/2 x 14. I have a good perf gauge (Scott multi gauge) and use an eye loupe to line things up. Scott only lists 15 x 14 and 13 1/2 x 14 as perfs for this issue. These are all watermarked and are thus not 1956 reissues. So for, I have piles of this perf in 4d, 5d, 9d and 1S lyrebird. There is a definite difference between the 15 and the 14 1/2 perf sizes.

What do better catalogs say? Suggestions for a better reference (besides SG obviously)?

For those of us who only view by "active topic", it would be helpful to add the country in the title. Brusden White's catalogues are, I think, the preferred volumes. I had an old GV one, but it was a bit too grown-up for my collection!

Hi 1937 - 38 issues COA watermark Perf 13 1/2 X 14
1938 - 45 issues COA watermark Perf 14 1/2 x 14
1948 - 56 issues no Watermark Pef 14 1/2 x 14
Bursdan and White will cost a fortune and is the best specialized Australian Catalogue.
I just used cheap Comprehensive colour Catalogue of Australian Stamps or a Renniks stamps of Australia

Thanks for the info. This seems like a common variety. Did Scott drop the ball? Thanks for pointing me towards Renniks!

Hi DCottrell

It is true that the Brusden White books (Australian Commonwealth Specialists' Catalogue) is expensive, from AU$95 - AU$125, I use the ACSC with all my KGV, KGVI & QEII pre-decimals and the latter's decimal issues.

There were no stamps perforated 14˝ x 14 that were issued during the KGVI era 1937-1952. In fact I do not recall any Australian stamp issue with that particular perforation during the pre-decimal period between KGVI and QEII.

1956 issues were printed on unwatermarked paper with either 15 x 14 or 14 x 15 perforation. The 1957 2/6d Aboriginal on unwatermarked paper has 14˝ x 15 perforation.

All issues from 1948-1956 have a variation of 15 x 14, 14˝ x 15 and 14 x 15 perforations.

All early first issue stamps of KGVI definitives printed (1937-1938) were 13˝ x 14 only (scarce perforation set).

DCottrell:

It's worth noting than the 15x14 perfs are actually 14.82x14.08, so extreme care is necessary when measuring.

Incidentally, ACSC rounds perfs to the nearest quarter while SG and others are generally to the half.

Finally, ACSC is expensive, but is well worth the expense because of the greater depth of the included information. You can cut down the cost by buying older copies on ebay one elsewhere but be warned that they seem to change their stamp numbers more often tha, eg, SG. I have a 1988 and a 1966 copy and their numbers differ between the two and also later issues.
