New to IDing with Scott's catalog, and many variations for this design. Looking to ID these and/or learn about best practices. Any info or advice appreciated. Thanks!

I'll direct you the Stamp Smarter's Washington/Franklin Identifier as this issue is my personal Waterloo. Interesting but very complicated. However, several members here understand them quite well. Good luck with these.

I would check the perfs first. The top stamp appears to be a perf ten rotary coil. Probably Scott 490 if there is no watermark. The second stamp looks like a perf 11 flat plate. If so then Scott 498, most likely a single from a booklet pane.

@phil I'm going to get some good use out of that link. Thanks!

@wtcrowe thanks for the info! I'm waiting on a perf gauge to be delivered; I'll look into watermark detection.

Looks like I have to get my identification scheme in order…

To address your "best practices" request. One needs the basic tools and proficiency of them:
Scott US Specialized catalog, perforation gauge, tongs, watermark tray and fluid. And patience.

That said, the Washington/Franklin series still challenges fairly advanced collectors. It is deeper water to swim in than other eras.

@John Becker Thanks for your input! Have the tongs, waiting on the perf gauge, researching the watermark tools https://www.stampcommunity.org/topi...54129#472073 . Now looking into the US specialized catalog.
