Could SCF List Home Cities?
2017 May 7
It would be helpful if users could download a file of area residents (either by city or postal code) so - for example - everyone in an area could be e-blasted to meet socially. But looks like SCF does not even collect names of home cities on application. Just thinkin'.

CanadaS, good idea. But a few of us already list our place of residence - just click on the family name.

I have reservations about doing this. It would be easy for someone to use this information to compile a list of targets for theft in a given area. There is a reason why this isn't done currently on many hobby forums. If someone could be able to opt out, I'd probably be OK with it.

As long as there is an opt-out ability in settings, I wouldn't be against it. If someone really wants to find you, they will. After all, any APS member has had their location published in the AP when applying for membership.

Very bad idea in my opinion. There is already a serious assault on privacy by the big internet players.

Not a good idea. There are a lot of poeple out there who would just love to get a list of stamp collectors they can visit for purposes other than philately talking...

The option is there, not mandatory. Almost no one uses it.

Agree with most members that personal info such a address is not necessary, as we already know not mandatory and the security aspects are important. I just removed my City from my profile - unnecessary detail. It is nice to know from which Country you are, though !

Hi

At one time the APS had a member directory that included addresses, collecting area, etc.. The directory was discontinued for security reasons, some of which are mentioned in the post.

Listing one's city may be a security hazard, but, with the internet one's address can be found with relative ease. Therefore, I see no security threat. Besides, one can just ignore the city-state field in the profile.
