If I'm in the wrong forum please let me know or move me.
Just wondering if my google abilities are lacking or is it difficult to find Scott numbers unless you buy the entire catalog? It seems like they guard the numbers very closely.

Welcome to the Stamp Community Family!
Scott catalog numbers are proprietary property, so the place to find them is in one of the catalogs.
You can find copies of the catalog in most libraries, usually in the reference section. The only stamps you may have some problem finding a number for would probably be those issued after the catalog was printed.
If you are looking for numbers for modern stamps, you can find the new issues listed in the Scott Stamp Monthly, published by Amos Publishing. They're also the owners of the Scott catalogs.
If you had a stamp you had a specific question about, post a picture and myself and others will be happy to help you out.
Again, welcome! |

@littleriverphil Yes, that was one of the 1st places I tried was the local library. I live in a very small town, under 40k. They have one very old catalog. I know about inter library loans but that takes a while. @Stampman2002 Thank you for the welcome and the info. It is as I suspected, I suppose. All of the stamps I'm looking for are going to be pre1996. It is a very large, world wide collection. I was hoping to find as much info as I can by myself. I don't wish to inundate the forum and wear out my welcome :)
@angore Thanks for the suggestion. I have run across them in my travels and have used them. |

Since all of your stamps are pre-2000, you could look for a cheap used set of Scott catalogues on ebay. This will work unless you are interested in current catalogue values. Unfortunately, since the collection is world-wide, you'll probably need all of the volumes. Not sure how many there were in the late 90s, but in recent years it has been a 6 volume set, with each volume being rather large. In fact, for 2018 Scott has split each of the 6 volumes into two parts, making the full 2018 set 12 volumes. |

I would also consider using stampworld's web site as an aid. The search function is useful. It can help narrow down issues since they can often be hard to find in Scott's just by scanning the small (and never complete set)images and less than stellar formatting of information for a multi-stamp set. for example, if a stamp is reissued later with same design it may be listed later and gets buried between other entries.

I go for the Mystic Catalog for the numbers and as a carry around reference - but I don't use their price though.
I agree with the rest of the others. Local Library is my only source for the Scott Catalog. They didn't have one either initially.
Did the inter-library transfer for a while. Seeing how much I was using it, those kind folks procured one for me |
