I would like to read comments about this block of nine 10 shilling stamps. I'm interested in figuring out what could be so expensive to mail. From what I've read, this would be more than a week's wages for an average worker in the mid 1940s. Thanks!
Nice block, Kelump. Don't discount the possibility of business post. The cancel is Regent Street which, if it's the London one (I'm sure there may be more), is certainly not a residential area.
On a side note to people who know London, where on Regent Street was the Post Office? I don't remember seeing one over the many years I've walked down there.
Ten shillings was half of one pound, so the face value of the block is basically £4.50. Something big and heavy was posted - but don't forget as far back as the 1860s, this stamp was issued:
The £5 orange would have been several weeks' wages, although its main purpose was not to pay for postage, but for the Post Office's internal accounting processes. Employees then passed the cancelled stamps to dealers. A fabulous display about the £5 issues here
