Building small cones of snowballs and putting a candle inside is an old tradition in Scandinavian countries. They look very pretty during the long evenings known as the "blue hour".

(Hello Philatelic, Glad you liked the snowy stamps, too bad the sailing ship has no snow! K.)

Two ships in snow and ice: a commemorative sheet for Georg Neumayer and the ships "Gaus" and "Polar Star", 2001. Photo of the new Neumayer station constructed in part above and in part below the snow level.

(Hi Alexey, Wonderful furry creatures you have in your part of the world! K.)

A fun way of getting around on snowy roads or ice in Scandinavia; it is called a sparkstötting (pushing by kicking; kicksled).

Alexey, The person sitting can be kept warm in furs just as the Russians do! Are there any in Russia? K.

And again the artist Surikov, "Suvorov's crossing the Alps." Many soldiers then saw mountains for the first time, but everyone knew how to skate in the snow.

(Kris. In fur clothes you can sit in the cold, you can lie in the snow. The best modern clothes do not give such an effect, it is checked!)

The beautiful skiing region surrounding Brasov lies somewhat north of Bukarest in the Carpathian mountains. The stamp of 1984 shows open ski-lifts, nowadays they are larger and closed.

(Hi Alexey, For the old ski-lift one would need very warm clothing; and it even seems to have only one gondola on the entire stretch. K.)

Children can have great fun sliding down the steep streets of San Marino on sledges in well-prepared paths.

(Hi Alexey, Too bad there isn't much bridge on your Vasnetsov stamp! K.)

Sweden issued a set of four stamps featuring paintings of winter. One is by Gustaf Fjaestad (1868-1948), "Rimfrost on Ice" which can be seen in the Thielska gallery in Stockholm.

(Hi Alexey, In the original of "Messengers" it looks as if the road were paved with wooden planks, that must be slippery! K.)

A work of art by Sven Ljungberg (1913-2010), who lived in Ljungby, is featured on another stamp in the set titled "Winter in Art". It is a colored woodcut showing Lelle Kalle, a well-know personality of Ljungby, at the train station. 2006

Philip von Schantz (1928-1998) did the third painting in the "Winter" set of 2006 and it can be seen in the Museum of Modern Art in Stockholm.
