The snow leopard is one of the most highly endangered of the big cats. It lives in the harsh, cold mountainous regions of Asia. One stamp in a set of four featuring endangered animals issued by Australia in 2016. |

The Rumanian stamp of 2000 is one in a set featuring endangered big cats. The small blurred area on the tiny map shows the range of the snow leopard but it is much more fragmented than can be seen on a map this small. Fragmentation of habitat makes it much more difficult for these cats to mingle genetically and is thus a major factor contributing to the reduction of their number. |

Bhutan has done much to protect the snow leopard from being poached. |

That goes for Kazakhstan as well. (I found a scan of this beautiful sheet on a site featuring mountains on stamps. K.) |

One in a set of four stamps in a Korean WWF souvenir sheet of last year shows an Amur tiger stalking in the snow. Sightings of tigers in Korea are extremely rare. |

The tiger subspecies "altaica" is the northern subspecies that can survive harsh winters with plenty of snow. It is also known as the Siberian or Amur tiger and may be the largest of all the big cats. Due to poaching and fragmentation of habitat it is a highly endangered subspecies. |

The depiction of two Amur tigers (that both appear to be adults) feeding together is fairly unusual. They don't normally hunt together. I'm not sure what prey was caught - at first I thought it might be a yak, but the range of the yak and that of the tiger are very far apart. Does anyone have a suggestion? The stamp commemorates 100 years of the Lisbon Zoo. |

Sweden honored Oskar Andersson, cartoonist and creator of comics with a set of two stamps featuring his "Artighet" drawing. The two gentlemen are trudging through the high snow beside the path because neither of them wants to seem impolite by taking the easier path. A Slania engraving. |

The artist Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840) is known for his rather somber paintings in dark colors. This stamp, showing the "Hünengrab im Schnee" (Megalithic Tomb in the Snow) is one in a set of six stamps featuring paintings that can be seen in the Museum of Art in Dresden. DDR 1967 |
