Poland issued a set of 8 stamps in 1968 to commemorate the winter olympics in Grenoble. Here are 4 of them which clearly show snow

Rättvik's church, far north of Stockholm, dates back to the 13th century. The building was changed and added to and its appearance today dates from 1793. Next to the church is a collection of stables for the horses on cold winter mornings; They are made of thick timbers and some of them are as old as 300+ years. All together there are 87 of them, now a national architectural monument. (Stamp 1973, photo ca 1890)

"Diamond Dust", Le poudrin de choquette, can form under very specific conditions. These ice crystals usually form when a temperature inversion is present at the surface and the warmer air above the ground mixes with the colder air near the surface. Thus you can get sparkling clear crystals falling in the sunshine under a pure blue sky. But it's difficult to photograph because of the sparkle effect.

When winter comes the Manchurian cranes, 'Grus japonensis' need help finding food. Many people of the island of Hokkaido feed them and have thus saved these magnificent but endangered birds. Stamps of 2010 and 2011.

When there are only a few snowflakes now and then, the cranes gather in groups and prepare to return to their nesting grounds. Note the left bird still has the brown neck of a youngster. Stamps of 2007 and 2008.

There can be heavy snow in Hälsingland, a bit north of Stockholm. This stamp engraved by Slania, 1980, shows one of the homesteads, 'Nygarden', made of thick timbers common to the region and painted in deep red. Several homesteads are now UNESCO heritage sites.

(The photo is new, I found it on the site of the broker selling the estate after the last of the owners had passed away.)

August Friedrich Piepenhagen (1791-1868) was a German landscape painter who spent most of his career in Prague. He was a button maker by trade and mostly self-taught as painter. His landscapes are full of detail and perspective. This one is "The Winter Landscape with the Frozen Pond".

the artist did a big mistake: the clear sky and vertical smoke from the pipes is a sign of severe frost, but in the foreground there is a large puddle of melted snow

The "Battle on the Ice" was fought between the Republic of Novgorod led by prince Alexander Nevsky and the crusader army led by the Livonian branch of the Teutonic Knights on April 5, 1242, at Lake Peipus. The battle is notable for having been fought largely on the frozen lake, and this gave the battle its name. (Wikip) The invading knights were defeated. Painted by Vladimir Serov (1910-1968). Stamp commemorates 750 anniversary.

Harvesting grapes during the winter can be very strenuous, but it's worth it because the berries have become somewhat dehydrated and the sugar content is thus higher. They need to be protected from the birds because they also appreciate sweet berries. The wine is called Icewine.

Hi Alexey, I found some information about the painter Sergey Ivanov, but did the Muscovites have skis as early as that battle against the Lithuanians in the 16th century? K.
