Dog riding is a common way of traveling in snowy regions. The expeditions of Fridtjof Nansen, the peoples of the north and even the inhabitants of central Russia use sled dogs

Way back in 1938, France issued a set of stamps for St Pierre and Miquelon featuring dogs at work in the snow. I can imagine that early exploration into cold regions would not have been possible without their help.

A completely different type of dog from those who love to run is the Bernardino, named after the famous pass. This breed is known for its ability to find people who have been buried by avalanches.

(Lesotho has very high mountains, but do they have snow?)

Rumania issued a set of eight stamps featuring different breeds of helping dogs; one of them is a St Bernard who has just exposed someone in the snow.

The first stamps issued by Switzerland for the new millennium showed in miniature things for which the country is known. One of them is the St Bernard dog.

A St Bernard with a rescue barrel on its collar, in front of the statue of the saint and what is now a large hotel/hospice at the site of the monastery on the Great St Bernard's Pass. Old painting of one of the monks who took care of raising and training of the breed.

One can take a picture of almost anything with a 'telephone' these days. It looks as if these are prints from two different people, size, shape, temperature are not the same, what do you think?

Another pretty snowball lantern on a Scandinavian evening, during the blue hour. What puzzles me about this picture is that there is only one track leading away from the lantern - the one at the far right doesn't seem to have anything to do with it.

Now that we are having a bit of real winter here in most of Europe, children can enjoy sledding. Normally snow flakes do not look as similar to each other as these three do.

At the moment there is plenty of snow in most of Europe, giving children a chance to do some sledding. Another drawing by A. Manser for the Pro Juventute set of 2000.

Spanish Andorra issued a skier for the 1976 Montreal Olympic games - but they were summer games.

(Hi Cursus, I just discovered that Pal had already appeared here, so I changed the stamp, which now fits better. K.

Sky resorts in Andorra, an independent (neither Spanish or French) principality in the middle of the Pyrenees, not too far (200 km) from my hometown. And yes, right now, we've plenty of snow, not right on the Mediterranean coast, but just a few kilometers inland.

Maurice Utrillo (1883–1955), was a French painter who specialized in cityscapes. Born in the Montmartre quarter of Paris, Utrillo is one of the few famous painters of Montmartre who was born there. Paraguay featured one of his many paintings showing Montmartre on a snowy day. Maybe it snowed more often in his day; this year there was snow in Paris. Stamp of 1968 and an extra painting.
