Hi guys...Was going through my 3 cent small queens and came across the stamp in the middle...The monitor does not do the colour justice, in hand it appears to be a Orange/Brown colour..Perfs are 12.0 x 12.0..This would make it a Scott 41 with No guides dots LL or 9 or 12. Could it be environmental damage..? Robert

Quote: Could it be environmental damage..? If so, wouldn't the margins appear different, not as white as 3 & 3 are, 1 is more ivory. Is it slightly underinked? The background shading lines appear clearer on the center stamp. |

Could the two outer ones both be slightly over-inked? Especially the left one looks way to colorful.

Actually, the 1886-1888 printings are usually the brown-red color, so I think your stamp is #37. Those printings were just before the move to the Montreal Gazette building in late 1888. The date on yours appears to be Feb 1, 1888. I have some dated examples, I will see if I can dig them up. |

Robert, the late Montreal printings have the 3 o'clock or 9 o'clock dots, which are usually obscured by the design. Far more stamps have unseen dots than visible dots. |

Hi Robert! To my eye it does not look like an environmental issue. With environmental issue you often can see the hues changes across the surface of the stamp, they are 'uneven'. This stamp's hue looks very consistent across the entire face of the stamp. Don |

Renden, 37a is a First Ottawa printing, in various shades of Rose. It was used in the early 1870's. Here is an example: |

BeeSee I agree that the 2nd Ottawa printing was # 41 but I have to get the Bible on shades for the small queens so difficult without a great reference, a little like the Large Queens, for which I have bought the Duckworth Bible from Green Foundation- CANADA'S POSTAGE STAMPS OF THE SMALL QUEEN ERA 1870-1897 (Hillson el) at least, for me, you stir our neurons ! |

Robert, here are four different shades I have: From left to right: #37 light brown-orange (Montreal mid 1880's) #37 brown orange (Late Montreal mid to late 1880's) #41a Carmine Rose (Last Montreal 1888-1889) #41 vermilion (2nd Ottawa late 90's) The colors look fairly accurate on my monitor. Rendon, no one said the small queens were easy! |
