All modern day hinges are manufactured by one company. Prinz in Germany. I have just heard from Prinz directly. Prinz manufactures one and only one type of hinge and then they are repackaged for various brands. To quote Prinz. "All hinges manufactured by Prinz should be the same."

Balderdash.

They all may be made by the same plant but I cannot be persuaded they are of the same gum composition and glassine quality. So they are saying that a pack of DennisEn brand is just as good as a pack of 'SuperSafe'?

I think perhaps they manufacture under contract for different suppliers, some of whom are willing to pay less for lower quality stuff.

All the info I provided comes directly from Prinz. As this subject is a mission in life for me I encourage you to contact Prinz directly with all of your concerns/question so we can know for sure. Please report back and let's keep digging until we are satisfied.

info@prinz.de

I once again asked Prinz to be very specific about the different brands. Waiting for response. They are prompt.

Growing up one summer I worked at a small, local bakery that sold 'freshly baked bagels'. Only trouble was that they were frozen bagels. But they did indeed pop them in the oven to defrost them and I was explicated told to always say 'they are freshly baked' (at risk of being fired).

So you will need to pin down Prinz on what exactly they mean by 'one type of hinge'. Does 'type' refer to the hinge dimensions? Or perhaps it is that they are all a folded type? Or perhaps type means that they are all water activated?

I just opened a package of Fasto hinges from Nordfrim that appear to be different than the Prinz/Supersafe hinges I'm used to, although I'd be open to the possibility that they're actually old stock. They are on a significantly thinner, almost transparent glassine paper, with what seems to be a thinner layer of gum. I haven't been using them long enough to render a definite verdict but my first impression is that they're somewhat better than most other modern hinges I've used. At the very least, the Fasto hinges don't seem to be as susceptible to curling as Prinz/Supersafe; if everything else was equal, that alone would be enough reason to switch to them.

The packaging is the same, they're all cut to the same size and folded 4-5 at a time, otherwise they are different, no question. Prices are different between EU-member brands, too (DAVO/FASTO). Is this the post with which you are taking issue?: htttp://www.stampcommunity.org/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=11321&whichpage=5

It would be terrible to find that each brand was done in one gigantic one-time batch with whatever glassine stock was available at the time. That could be possible. Regardless, hinges are different by brand.

I use the G&K brand hinges ( $2.94/1000) from Subway stamp and they work fine for me.

Prinz insists that all hinges manufactured by them no matter what brand name are exactly the same. One type of hinge all the same.

Thank goodness I've 30+ packets of Dennison, Prinz, Minkus Publications, Western Stamp, Scott, H E Harris, Fold-O-Hinge, Monarch & Honor-Bilt hinges, all originals in packets ranging from 750/1000 up to 1750, that I got awhile back super cheap, about $5 for them all. Got a bag of 10k or so loose mixed ones in the deal too. Printed original prices are 10˘-25˘ & some are unopened. I tried the newer "Dennis's" in the small cardboard box w/ the kids pic on the front - crappy to say the least. CAUTION - They are NOT peelable, no way! Taking them off an album page tears the page unless you cut them at the fold, & the remnant will tear the stamp back unless soaked off - my experience anyway but YMMV.

One thing I've done in the past to make them go twice as far is to cut the hinge in half holding it upright (vertical) w/ the fold horizontal, same height, just half as wide. Works perfectly for me anyway.
