Is it maybe (B.O) (branch office?) what letter/s follows that ?

I have looked at the mark on the Diamond Jubilee cinderella and I think the date is June 28thI can't see an L. the lettering after Finsbury park is a different font. After going bug eyed staring at it I think it reads (S.O) N I am not certain it is an S because I can't trace the top curves with absolute certainty. I bow to you superior knowledge of cancellations to work out if they did use two fonts on one canceller, could it be that a skeleton handstamp was unofficially used to make a special cancel? I don't know.
Do you have a SG number for the intense black £1 you haven't displayed is it 598a the Bradbury Wilkinson printing.

I was about to debate your opinion on "S.O." then I found evidence of a squared circle Pmk with "Finsbury Park SON" dated 1895
That would support your case.

I am almost certain now, we can call that a CDS "Finsbury Park ( S O ) N 2

SO = Sorting Office. (N=North?)

Date of introduction 1st October 1855
Printed at Somerset house, from existing Post Office dies, drilled for date plugs.
One die preferably to be used, otherwise lowest value to the right.
Stamps cut from all stationery, could be used in the same way as adhesive stamps.

This piece maybe an undocumented code letter "C"

This 1½d STO die was introduced in 1872 first in lilac-rose and then in 1874 in brown.

A new version with a single border was introduced in 1890, again in brown.

All three stamps were used on wrappers and letter sheets as well as on envelopes. I guess this one was on a wrapper given the look of the paper and the postmark.

Postal use of cutouts was banned from October 1870 until December 1904 so this stamp is unliikely to have been used that way.

Brightmore gives no indication at all, the 1½d STO's of that shape were used for anything but envelopes.
However, if one reads his "Stamped Postcards" he writes..
1872 STO facilities introduced at Somerset House"

Very tricky.

He mentions no STO Wrappers at all under 1½d

I think, on reflection, we can gather When one took paper for STO, it could be either of the three you mention.

The STO envelopes he quotes are
1872 1½d rose.
1874 1½d brown
1892 1½d yellow

1½d without frame lines 1890

I am keeping a look out for compound stamps, I think I have one somewhere.

I still rely on Huggins & Baker for this information.

They listed these dies under Envelopes & Paper STO but they noted the other uses for each one where they were known.

I see this lists the 1½d yellow of 1892 as being the same die as the 1890 brown stamp (so without the outer frameline).

I had heard that a new edition of this very useful book was in preparation so I had a look at the Postal Stationery Society website just now but was very sad to see that Colin Baker died last year. :(
