7 Broadwick Street was the Bricklayers Arms pub. The place where Brian Jones made the auditions to what became the greatest rock and roll band in the world. "I went to the Bricklayers Arms, a seedy pub in Soho, for the first time for the first rehearsal for what turned out to be the Stones.

I think it was May of '62, lovely summer evening. Just off Wardour Street. Strip Alley. I get there, I've got my guitar with me. And as I get there the pub's just opened. Typical brassy blond old barmaid, not many customers, stale beer. She sees the guitar and says 'Upstairs', and I can hear this boogie woogie piano, this unbelievable Meade Lux Lewis and Albert
Ammons stuff. I'm suddenly transported in a way. I feel like a musician and I haven't even got there! I could have been in the middle of Chicago, in the middle of Mississippi.

I've got to go up there and meet this man who's playing this, and I've got to play with him, And if I don't measure up, it's over. That was really my feeling as I walked up those stairs, creak creak creak. In a way, I walk up those stairs and come down a different person..."

Brian Jones was a guitar hero of mine to the point where I am as serious about the Stones as I am about stamps. I too worked at Smith's, but this was in Toronto in 1971. I had the chance to buy one of Brian's old guitars for 80 guinees in 1966 but where was a 16 year old lad going to get that sort of money back then.

Watching him on the harp, at the time, got to me, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I couldn't afford vinyl at the time, so I wasn't really hooked into the music until "Fresh Cream" arrived in '66.

I have looked through Gibbons specialised, dashed if I can see it.

I think you have a strip there (or parts of two coil strips, depending how you view such things) from 1971.

This is listed as a 5p strip of 5 stamps (½p x 2, 1p x 2 & 2p): SG 841n from 1971, which fits with the postmark.

Nice to have most of the dated parcel postmark!

they have gone over to the "X" precursor.

That program and a charitable organization called British War Relief Society worked to provide life's necessities to those in Britain who needed them. "Bundles for Britain" was folded into the Marshal Plan at the end of the war, and that effort continued to send food parcels to Britain. This operation was taken over by the Committee for American Relief Everywhere, the familiar CARE package.

Did it make a difference? Evidently those bundles of CARE packages to Britain did. The slogan cancellation from a cover to South Solon, Ohio, shown photographically cropped in Figure 5, is postmarked Bradford, Aug. 22, 1949. The slogan reads "Britain Says Thank You for Food Gifts."

The suffering caused by famine in Africa, the cracked earth in drought-ravaged Texas, and reminders of hunger and food shortages from days gone by might serve to remind all of us that food and water are precious and should not be wasted.
