Progressing with the Machin ID, Photo v Litho. The family of the 75p. The February 1988 (Litho.) is by far, the nicest production, and the most valuable stamp, of the quartet. |

Geoff, the Brollies, and the Museum look nice, the others not my cup of Cocoa, but I guess they are today's currency in art. Update on the Machins, I sorted a lovely set of 1993-1997 Machins, turned the Page, and found they had been re-drawn.........Sheesh. Have to start sorting all over again. |

Regarding the quartet of 75p, (In the preceding posts) easy enough to ID, but the colours? Shades of Black?
The Question was put to Mr. Douglas Myall, but alas, no reply was caught by the correspondent.
In The Spotlight GBCC President Gordon Milne interviews Douglas Myall, Machin Expert Published in the April, 1999 issue of The Chronicle, the journal of the Great Britain Collectors Club.
Milne: Another member also has problems/challenges with colors. specifically, he asks: "How does one identify 'new green' from 'deep green;' 'shocking pink' from 'bright magenta;' or the three different blacks used on the 75p value?"
Myall: I think "new green" and "deep green" are different names for the same color used by different publishers. "Shocking pink" is a Matthews color although it is omitted from the Bulletin list referred to above. It has been used only for the 3p of 1989 and the 39p of 1996. (Note: It was subsequently used for the 7p of 2004.) I don't know who uses "bright magenta" or for what stamp. I use "pale magenta" for the 2 1/2p of 1971 for the previously given reason. It is nothing like "shocking pink."

For years, I have always been curious, as to why older depictions of Lions on stamps were so bad? so unlike the real thing, almost human........... The few bestiary books I had, had the cynosure on Egyptian, and lacked any treatment on later images. Today, surprised to see Jstor treat the enigma. |

Hi Rod,
I see two of your mutilated stationery fragments are dated stamps used on stamped to order stationery.
So if you can read the date you can see when the envelope or paper was stamped.
These are the 4d used in Ipswich and the 2½d used in London.

Nigel, yes, I was aware of that, due to the difference between the cancel dates, and the embossed date, I have been presuming the embossed date, has little relevance, other than the identifying the manufacture date. Comments?

Machins. Flyspecking. The 3 x 2½p Pink Machins, A,B,and C. Quite a challenge to identify, especially the "Pointy" example Scott images appear to be (to me) incorrect, all shown with the "½" touching the bust. In my examples the MH32 A is the only type to touch the bust, the other 2 are 1-1½mm apart. I identified the "Pointy" only by 600dpi scans and "toggling" |
