A friend at work sent a postcard to the office from Cardiff while she was visiting family around the end of March 2017. Th stamps she purchased from the Post Office were GB stamps to cover the international rate.

What I find interesting is why the label placed over top the stamp with instructions to send undeliverable mail to Budapest, Hungary?

Any ideas?

Many thanks,

Look like a post card, quite frequent for someone who travel to his address in case of non-delivery in his country

It come from a Circus, they have a lot of Hungarians performing in circus

Look this one was in Bermuda, send a letter to England and put his address in Canada in case of non-delivery

I now have a nice image in my mind of a Hungarian circus troupe sending postcards as they travel around the world!

No, but it was an option!

I was simply short of time before going out. Now I'm back home again.

Here's my earlier posting:

It's hard to be sure when the original stamp has been covered by the label but I expect that it was not a regular British stamp but one issued by Universal Mail United Kingdom Ltd.

This is a private company which is allowed (for some reason) to sell labels for sale to the public that cover the delivery of tourist postcards to non-UK addresses.

Here's a link to the company's web site:

http://www.universalmail.co.uk/

This shows some examples of their stamps. The layout of these seems to fit with what can be seen of the stamp here.

The labels are quite pretty and they do cover the payment of a service (even though nearly all the real work is done by Royal Mail and the official postal service in the destination country).

However, from what I've read delivery can be be very slow indeed.

The labels are not sold by Post Offices but in souvenir shops, usually in popular tourist locations

I suspect the Hungarian address is simply a convenient one for the British company. I believe it's part of an international group so maybe this refers to a shared facility.

For a number of years there was a similarly-named private mail company in New Zealand with a similar logo and style but it's no longer in business.

nigelc Thank you and yes I posted here and SOR. I figured the widest possible exposure would help me get an answer.

area66, it did not come from a circus. Picadilly Circus is a location within the London. The person is from Canada so the return address was in Canada.

Thanks all
