Sorry if this has already been posted and I missed it... An area of collecting that I'd neglected is collecting booklets and or booklet covers. Although I've been collecting since 1972, over the years, I have just put booklets and their covers aside in a drawer or box. Recently, I have been cleaning up my "junk" boxes and drawers and identifying items, putting them where they belong in stock books and so on and I amassed all the booklet covers together in one place. Only then realizing how many I have.
Looking for some opinions on booklet cover collecting (as in no stamps just the cover) and how you display them. Particularly with the newer self-adhesive stamp booklets. Do you keep the entire thing or trim all but the "cover" and a plate # strip? Or? What do you do to put a full older folded booklet in an album?
I don't see a society in the APS listings for a stamp booklet specialty. Is there one or can you recommend a good source of information?
I realize we all have our own ways and preferences, just looking for common practices and ideas.
Thank in advance, Jeff

Hi Jeff. I do not collect booklet covers or panes, but I can give you a few hints. The PNC3 website has info on a bunch of booklets. http://PNC3.org . Also, the United States Stamps Society has a "Booklet and Booklet Panes" study group. http://usstamps.org . Hope some of this helps, Peter |

I collect booklet panes only. If I had booklet covers I would just put in the Scott order like anything else on custom pages like any other stamp album. I mount my older ones within the regular album |

Quote: Particularly with the newer self-adhesive stamp booklets. Do you keep the entire thing or trim all but the "cover" and a plate # strip? Or? Thinking about it a little, the early one sided SA convertible booklet panes had printing over the entire back, but the 2 sided ones only have a "cover" that is about 1/3 of the width of the pane and the rest would be blank if you remove all the stamps, so maybe trimming the 2 sided ones wouldn't be much of a sin and you would save lots of storage space (and storage cost). Either way they aren't likely to have any value as just empty covers, so do whatever pleases you. |

Having them open allows both the front and back to be shown, but that doubles the width they take up. |

How about some potato Tax Exempt booklets: I've seen a picture of the 100 pound booklet, but can't find it. |

Anyone know anything about how booklets were produced? I recently saw an 8 cent airmail booklet with two front covers, but only one back cover. It was in a very large postage lot and did not appear to have been tampered with. |

The potato booklets got me thinking about other booklets... I like to include a few oddities in my collection from time to time. Back in the early 80's I managed an ARCO gas station and one afternoon a lady coasted into the station, out of gas with a car full of kids and had no money but needed to get to the bank, which was about to close to cash a check. She asked if I'd hold a $2 booklet of food stamps to get her enough so she could get there and promised to return, fill up any buy the food stamps back. We weren't suppose to but it was only a couple bucks.. so I told her sure. While she was gone I was looking at them and thinking... food stamps... stamps! She did return and filled up but I bought the food stamps from her for my stamp collection. She thought I was nuts but said ok. I'd never seen them before and were much nicer than I thought they would be. I still have them. |
