Hi,
I just finished sorting a great number of early Straits Settlement stamps and as I began hinging them, I realized that there is one set for King Edward VII, and of course another similar set for King George V.

Their images are (to me) very similar, and of course they appear on many stamps for each of the English colonies.

I often have trouble distinguishing between the two - even with an Optivisor. So I'm thinking that perhaps there is an identifier that you all might use to make it easier to separate them.

Your guidance is greatly appreciated!

Photos or scans would help.

Edward VII is bald, George V is not. Any definitive with a rectangular frame around the head plate is Edward VII and not George V.

Hi; Well that's not a big problem; Edward VII was bald on the top of the head!

I used to think that it was easy to tell the difference between my Dad and I the same way ... he was bald, and I wasn't.

These days, that rule no longer applies. (We're both bald.)

George V chased stamps and pheasant; Edward VII chased girls.

@Parttime - since you're now both bald, maybe one of you is more "definitive with a rectangular frame"?

Well, the enlargements makes the difference pretty obvious. The stamps I am working with are mostly cancelled and those marks made it harder to differentiate. With the Optivisor and strong lights, it is not that big of a deal to separate them. Thanks all for the help........have to say I do like the English stamp issuing countries a lot.

I sometimes have had issues quickly telling them apart on some used stamps with cancels, etc. In looking at the pics now, the contour of the nose also seems to be a telling feature,

Hi again!
Well, I finished going through all the "King" stamps and yes, I found where I misapplied 5 or 6 of them. While the hair (or lack) is a big help in distinguishing them, cancellations seem to find their way to obscure that area quite often. However, thanks to you guys, I find that the nose profile is almost always visible.

Thanks again!
