Smq Pricing Vs Scott / 634A Example

I recall a discussion recently and some were asserting that SMQ prices were for graded stamps. I treated SMQ pricing as no different than Scott. It is not a real retail cost on could reasonably get a sample.

I was looking at the upcoming Harmer Schau auction and they have a Scott 634A graded 95J with a reference SMQ price of $2900. The estimate is $1400 to $1600.

At PSE's web site they list the value for 95 as $2250 so not sure if their web SMQ is up to date. Scott lists 634A in 95 as $2150.

In any the case the estimate is still around 60 to 70% of Scott.

Does anything think it will likely exceed the estimate?

It is on my some day to get want list but I will likely stay with VF so closer to $500 or less.

Scott doesn't value J's just straight grades, don't know if SMQ values J's or not.

This seems overgraded to me. It's off in both directions. It will be interesting to see if it sells.

I am not sure that Bill Langs stamp is over graded. The cert reads 85 and as such it could be off slightly in two directions. His asking price is over the current SMQ price of $725.00

angore, the current PSE SMQ value for a 634A graded 95J is $2900, as stated correctly by Harmer Schau in their auction listing. Scott does not give an SSV grade value for jumbo stamps. Neither Scott's SSV nor PSE's SMQ value for grade 95 would be relevant to a stamp graded 95J.

That exact same stamp sold back in 2012 for $1,800 plus Buyer's Premium in Siegel sale 1034 as lot 512.

A quick look in Siegel Powersearch shows that the higher grade 634As don't bring their lofty SMQ values either.

With thinly traded items like this your best bet is to look at auction realizations; this is just like my industry (I am a car dealer). Kelly Blue Book says a car is worth $14K on trade but they're doing $13,000 at the auction.....

I was referring to the original stamp, not the Langs stamp.

My take on this that SMQ is not much different than Scott. I most cases they both seem to be close to each other. It is not like CDN (Coin Dealer Newsletter) where prices are more accurate of market. My example was showing how far off it can be.

The problem with SMQ is that one some thinly traded stuff it's tough to put a value on it.

80-90 Zeppelins? Easy.

Rare stuff where the pop is well under 10 and they rarely come up for sale? Guesswork.

disi, not sure why you posted the pair of 634's, but if it was for grading opinions, I'd guess the top stamp at 90 and the bottom at 80/85. Neither would be worth submitting IMO.
