Quote: I love the work that has gone into the picture....is it an engraving? It's not engraving, it's typography. Nicely done, eh? And a nice cover. Note the horse and rider at left. It's very much like on the Pony Express stamps. Trivia is that horses don't normally gallop like that, certainly not with that extreme leg extension. This was typical in art and is also seen in old US post office logo(s). That (mostly) changed after Eadweard Muybridge did his stop-motion photography in 1878. I don't know at the moment when the frank was first issued, but Wells Fargo apparently liked the look better than absolute accuracy. |

Expensive is relative. Have a look at ebay closed/ended auctions for these. Cost depends on the quality overall, rarity of cancel, usage. San Francisco usage is obviously common, but the cover is a nice one here. Multiple envelopes were glued together to make up higher rates, with each additional envelope cancelled but without an address. The additional envelopes are available and should be cheaper. |

Quote: Are they expensive? Some are, some aren't. There are common franks and rare ones, common uses, and uncommon usages. Like all cover collecting there are lots of varibles, such as condition, origin, destination. As you can see from ebay sold listings, prices are everywhere. https://www.ebay.com/sch/Postal-His...045573.m1684. Here are three of my personal favorites, an 1854 combined use and two "out of the mail" uses. The first and second I was high bidder for, the last I paid a dollar for. |

Yes, quite striking isn't it! Issued with the Columbian issue, design #U76; Scott U348, a 1 cent blue, U349, the 2 cent violet, and U350 a 5 cent chocolate. |

I'm pretty jealous Phil! I have the chocolate as a cut square, I saw it a couple of days ago but I'm still sorting my box of US! And in blue it gives the cover a clean fresh look Cheers |

[:) Thanks. Would love to find the other two detonations of the PSE used from my two counties. Don't know if Well Fargo franked those two, the 5 cent I could see a use for.
