I have is cover which I assume was part of the Pan American airmail test that was conducted on Nov. 1 1946. But this cover has two postmarks with Oct.1??? Wrong date at the post office? worth anything?
Looks like post office in Buenos Aires held it for a month then PAA stamped it received on N(ov) 5 1946. Looks like the same red ink as Return to Sender is stamped with. That address is quite interesting. Lined out, I think they failed. test completed
I would say that it was the wrong date in the postmark (forgot to change from October to November). These covers had to be mailed November 1 to take part in the test.
A curiosity, but I doubt it adds a lot to the value.
The Pan Am offices were instructed as follows: 1) Mark the cover "Return to Sender" 2) Draw a line through the address 3) Place proper airmail postage on the front lower left of the cover.
These were mailed from any town or city in the US and so there was no control over the postmarks. This seems to be a simple case of the guy at the post office changing the date line in the cancelling machine from October 31 to November 1 and changing the 31 to a 1 but forgetting to also change the October to November. I see no added value because of this. What would add value would be a complete matched set from one preparer at one post office to every city in Latin America and the Caribbean that took part in the test. These full sets are getting hard to find.
