I came across an old document today. It belonged to my great aunt. It's a property deed, and it has a number of doc stamps affixed. I know nothing about these...not my area of expertise, collecting -wise. Can anyone give me a little education about them?

You've come to the right place. Can you scan the entire document front and back to help us see what fee was being paid? Pretty sure tax (stamps) was based on the deed amount?

Ok, for the original post with the 1942 documentary issues: 5c-R340, 10c-R342, 50c-R346, $3.00-R350 from the Scott's Catalogue. So $3.85 of federal tax on recording a deed. As the deed listed only $1.00 as consideration to keep prying eyes at the courthouse from knowing the valve of the sale. You must do a little detective work to see the sales price. So $3.85/0.55 c per 1000 = 7 or a sale price of $7,000.

That wouldn't be hard to find, I think. I could search the county real estate data base and find that out. There's other papers that were with this deed (nothing else with stamps, sadly), so the info may even be there somewhere. The unfortunate thing about this property of my aunt's is that that whole neighborhood is gone. It was taken over recently by the nearby university, razed, and redeveloped as campus property. My aunt has been gone for 35 years as well, so I'm not going to get too many answers from her either.

I think you area thinking about property searches in the internet age. In 1943 you had to go to the courthouse and read through the dead books, to do tittle searches.
